Hurstpierpoint 3 – 0 Albury Eagles

Today was a good test for the boys. Albury were up against Hurstpierpoint who finished 2nd in the league and won the cup last season. It was a good competitive game. Albury deploying a 4-5-1 formation frustrated and matched the cup winners. Albury held Hurstpierpoint until just before half time when the deadlock was broken giving Hurstpierpoint a 1 – 0 lead at half time. Albury squandered some chances with Ryan Butler and Matt Evans coming close. Into the second half and when Albury were holding their own Hurstpierpoint made it 2 – 0. Ryan Butler who received a yellow card in the first half (which was mistaken identity on the ref’s part) was red carded and sent off with 20 minutes to go. The ref later rescinded the red card to a yellow as he had made a mistake. But with Albury down to 10 men the task of getting back into the match became impossible. Hurstpierpoint then added a third to make the final score 3 – 0. A gritty performance by the boys which will set them in good stead for the rest of the season.

Kirdford 1 – 7 Albury Eagles

The U14s played Kirdford away on Saturday in the league. Albury started exceptionally well and Steven Lake scored,  with another following shortly afterwards from Harry Good.  We then took our foot off the gas a bit and Kirdford pulled one back but then literally seconds after taking the kick off we restored our 2 goal lead. Albury continued to play some fantastic foot ball in the first half and went into the break 5 – 1 up. In the second half we changed formation and made a few substitutions but continued to play some good football. James Hern scored after a mazey run down the left and Harry Good completed a great hat-trick. Albury ran out victors 7 – 1 with 1 goal each from James Hern and Steven Lake, 2 from Daniel Cannon and 3 from Harry Good. This week’s MOM Archie Neve with a strong performance in centre midfield.

Northchapel 2 – 3 Albury Eagles

Albury Eagles under 13s produced a quality finish to grab all three points away from a very strong Northchapel team. Having gone a goal down, Nathaneal Farrant levelled the score line but a below par performance by Albury in the first half saw another goal conceded before the break.

In a reshaped formation in the second half, the Eagles battled more for the ball in midfield with Harvey Marshall ( Man of the Match ) not giving the time and space that Northchapel had enjoyed previously. Albury started to dominate the game and the pressure paid off with the award of a penalty that Christopher Brooks coolly tucked away to level the score line.

With Jonathan Pennock in goal dealing with the remaining Northchapel attacks it was left to Christopher Brooks to grab the breakthrough goal in the 65th minute. Colby Silver's pass out of defence saw the ball arrive at Christopher's feet who then struck a shot from outside the area that passed the outstretched hands of the Northchapel keeper and into the net to seal the game for Albury.

Albury Eagles 4 - 7 Northchapel Colts

A beautiful sunny morning on the Heath. but that’s just about all Eagles will want to remember about this tetchy encounter with an over-physical Northchapel side who, aided by some idiosyncratic refereeing, muscled Eagles out of their way.

For the first 15 minutes the sun shone on the Eagles who looked like they were getting into their stride. After good work on the left from Hugo Squires, Tommo Wall gave the home side the lead.

Far from being deflated the visitors tore into Albury and on 20 minutes had turned the game around with two well-taken goals. Some tough tackling from the visitors ensured they dominated the game and could have extended their lead after Eagles gave away a penalty. However, keeper Tom O’Neill made a splendid diving save.

Against the run of play Eagles equalised on 28 minutes, Elliott Cozens firing home from the edge of the area. But back came Northchapel once again and restored their lead on the stroke of half time when, not for the first time in the gain, Albury failed to clear their lines.

The second half began brightly for the Eagles with Cozens hitting the post and George Thompson just failing to connect with a cross. But as Eagles pressed forward Northchapel doubled the lead with a breakaway goal that exposed Albury’s defensive frailties.

Back came Albury with Cozens’ second reducing the deficit. But within ten minutes two controversial penalty decisions put the game well and truly beyond the home side. First, keeper Tom O’Neill was penalised for holding on to the ball for too long and then an innocuous-looking tackle resulted in the finger being pointed at the penalty spot once again.

William Potts went close for the home side and Thompson reduced the deficit but the visitors added a seventh just before the final whistle. A morning to forget.

U14 Horsham League Cup Second Round

11.10.08

Albury Eagles 1 - 4 Southwater United Red

U14s Played Southwater at home on Saturday in the cup, Albury started well and had a few early chances. Unfortunately we conceded the first goal from a corner but continued to play well. The first half finished with just the one goal in it. Southwater came out in the second half moving the ball around well and we again conceded 2 quick goals. We had plenty of opportunities to score and Callum Ogburn pulled one back with ten minutes to go. The teams were evenly matched and there was not much of a difference between the A league side and the C league side. But as we pressed Southwater scored a 4th and sealed the win. A great team performance with MOM Will Walker

U13 Horsham League Chairman’s Cup Round 2

11.10.08

Albury Eagles 5 - 3 Storrington Vipers United

Albury Eagles under 13s progressed to the Quarter- finals of the Chairman's Cup with a home win against Storrington Vipers. Nathnael Farrant set the Eagles on their way with an opening goal after only 2 minutes. Then with an amazing run from the half way line, Philip Smith rounded three or four players to end up at the 6 yard box were he lifted the ball over the head of the Storrington keeper and into the top right side of the goal. Tom Cantoni made it 3-0 before half time and Albury seemed to be cruising into the next round.

Storrington Vipers came back onto the pitch for the second half and totally dominated the match for the next 10 minutes scoring three goals in succession to bring the score to 3-3. This shocked Albury back into action once again and saw good team play allowing Tom Beazley to go close with a shot and Harvey Marshall see his effort on goal deflected onto the cross bar. Albury regained control of the game with a Christopher Brooks goal who then finished off the match with another shortly before full time.
