Upper Beeding 1 – 1 Albury Eagles

We had a very hard fought draw today against a very good side. But it does show that we do have a good squad of players that can handle playing against stronger and better opposition. A very strong Upper Beeding side was matched all the way by a very determined Albury side. After a lot of end to end play Albury finally made the breakthrough in the first half. A Chris Caley corner was knocked back down to Ben Smith who scooped his shot into the goal past the stranded goalkeeper. In the second half Upper Beeding applied more pressure. Albury were struggling to get out of their own half. It was decided to add a bit of assurance in defence by playing five defenders to try and see out the match. But with five minutes to go Upper Beeding scored after a deflected corner fell nicely at the feet of one of their forwards to slip the ball into the Albury net. A great performance by the whole squad. Remember Upper Beeding finished third in this league last season so it was still a very good draw.

Well done everyone!

Albury Eagles 1 - 2 Copthorne

U14’s Played Copthorne at home on Saturday, This was a well contested and close game with Copthorne having slightly more possession but being unable to capitalise on it due to some great saves from Will Walker and stout defending from James Hern. Copthorne took an early lead but both teams went in at half time even after a great strike from Steven Lake. Unfortunately Eagles conceded another goal early in the second half which we were unable to respond to. MOM Callum Ogburn for some excellent tackling and haring of the opposition’s midfield, great example!!

Albury Eagles 4 - 6 Dorking Saints Lions

Nathanael Farrant's superb hat-trick performance deserved a winning result against last season’s cup and A league winners Dorking Saints but unfortunately it wasn’t to be Albury 's day. Nathanael grabbed the first goal from a well worked corner for Albury after 5 minutes, and Christopher Brooks put the Eagles side into a 2-1 lead a little later. With George Duff and Alex Dangerfield playing determined defensive roles at the back, it allowed new keeper and man of the match Jonathan Pennock to have an outstanding home debut to keep Dorking at bay. Saints levelled the score to 2 -2 in an even first half just before the break, but one that could have been different for the Albury team if shots coming back off the woodwork had  found the net.

Dorking started the stronger of the two teams in the second half and quickly added two goals to the scoreline, but Albury showed an excellent fighting spirit and were back on level terms just minutes later to make it 4 - 4. As the game went on Dorking's experience and well drilled passing game overcame Albury and they finished off the game with a further two goals to end Albury’s first home game of the season  4 -.6.

A disappointing result in the end, but a game where the under 13's showed that they are more than capable of matching any team in the Horsham League.

Holmbury Wolves 0 – 9 Albury Eagles

Eagles’ impressive start to the season continued brushing aside the challenge of Holmbury Wolves.

Eagles dominated the game from the first whistle with Eliott Cozens, brimming with confidence after hitting eight the week before, opening his account after just two minutes. From then on it was all one-way traffic as Eagles took complete control. Cozens went close twice more before William Potts extended the lead with a superb individual effort, beating four defenders before finishing coolly.

More chances came and went for Cozens, Louis O’Hanlon and Sam Hoyland before Cozens added his second. Tom Hartley, who had found plenty of space down the right, added Eagles’ fourth on the stroke of half time.

There was no respite for Holmbury in the second half. Three minutes in and Cozens completed his hat-trick after he was pulled back in the area. Hartley grabbed his second after taking advantage of a defensive slip and Potts slammed in a shot from the edge of the area. Full back Dan Foulsham ventured forward and powered home the eighth while Potts secured his second hat-trick in as many weeks to complete the rout.

Although the goalscorers caught the eye this was a hardworking performance from the midfield quartet and from a defence marshalled by Owen Bracey who snuffed out any threat of a Holmbury attack.

Information now on the Tadworth League, which will kick off on Saturday 27th September.

League fixtures are now posted on the new website www.prawnsandwich.com with the first round of matches scheduled to start on Saturday 27th September with all games to be completed on or before the 4th April 2009.

A team trophy and players’ trophies (reasonably sized) for each league winner will be presented at the end of season, with the Under 8’s Divisions receiving a ‘Fair Play Award’.

To promote the right behaviour from players, coaches and spectators, the Tadworth League is introducing a requirement for all players (including substitutes) to line up before the start of the game (exactly as the Premier League has adopted) and for each player to then
shake  hands with the opposing players as they walk alongside.
