This is the first newsletter of 2007, and a number of Albury teams are sitting very comfortably as we look towards the last third of the season.
We have managed to get through a good proportion of our games, although since New Year, there has been a vast amount of rain. Activity has been called off on the heath on two Saturdays, due to water saturation, but our sides are still well placed to finish their game schedules on time - unlike many teams on the clay of south Surrey and Sussex.
Performance-wise, the Under 13 and Under 11 departments are looking particularly good, with both squads sitting in prominent promotion spots, and, in forthcoming Cup semis. The U12s have had a tough winter, finding wins very hard to come by, even though their matches have mostly been close encounters of the 'one goal in it' kind. Stepping up to the B Div following promotion was always going to be quite a big ask.
The mini-soccer playing Under 10s have had a number of fine wins recently as they prepare for 11 a side from September, and are putting together a schedule of training games for the spring.
Meanwhile in the Tadworth League, our collective of teams at Under 8 and Under 9 have been performing well with some excellent results lately.
NEW GOALPOSTS The club's recent application for a 50% grant from the Football Foundation to purchase new goalposts for the Heath has been successful, and we have been awarded £695. The Albury Parish Council have very kindly agreed to match the figure - so, new goal-posts for nothing. Fantastic !!
When some dry weather finally arrives, a working party will gather to install the new 'Euro Goalposts', which are the same style as used in the Premiership.
Cup Heroics Can I draw your attention to two important matches on Saturday 10th March…….
Our U11 and U13 sides have made it through to the semi finals of their Horsham League Cup and Plate competitions, respectively.
At Under 11, John Duff's Eagles are playing Hurstpierpoint in the Semis of the Heron Way Cup, to be staged at The Weald School in Beare Green. For travelling supporters - shall we lay a few coaches on? Enquiries please to John and Neil, and the Very best of luck to the boys!
Meanwhile, John Caley's Under 13s have drawn League Division A leaders Maidenbower, with this match actually being staged on the Heath. It would be great if we could get a major turn out to cheer the boys on. Kick Off 9.30am, 10th March.

U13s 24.02.07 Albury 0- 4 Old Dorkinians Today's result was disappointing to say the least. After starting well and missing a couple of good chances, we really under-performed today. Old Dorkinians came back into the game and capitalised on our lack-lustre performance. They scored 4 good goals and deserved to win. We had no player who was outstanding today; it was a poor performance. But it means now, that we still need to win 3 more league matches to be promoted. All of our games are against lower table sides. So I have asked the boys for a better performance next week. John Caley

U13s 03.02.07 Horsham League Plate Quarter Final Partridge Green 2 - 4 Albury Just like to say thanks to everyone involved today as after a hard fought Quarter-Final win today against Partridge Green we have reached our first Semi-Final. Well Done!! 4 goals from Dan Kelly saw us into the Semis. John Caley
U12s 03.02.07 Henfield 3-2 Albury Eagles
U11s 03.02.07 Horsham League Heron Way Cup Quarter Final Lower Beeding Lions 0-4 Albury A spirited captain's performance by Harvey Marshall, and strong determination by his team carried the Albury Eagles under 11's into the semi-final of the Heron Way cup in style. A threaded through ball from Harvey (one of three assists) saw Philip Smith run into the area and shoot past the Lower Beeding keeper to make sure Albury went off the pitch one-nil up at half time. Albury took control of the second half, and thanks to excellent wing play by Tom Cantoni and David Hearns, an on form Nathaneal Farrant added a hat-trick to his growing tally of Eagles goals. The best of the three being a run past two defenders and blasting past a stranded goal keeper. Solid defensive displays from George Stevens and Colby Silver made sure that Freddie Wall was hardly troubled in goal, and thanks to a great all round showing by all of the Albury team, this result guaranteed that the under 11's take their place in the last four of this cup competition. Neil Marshall
U10s 03.02.07 Albury Eagles 2-1 Southdown
Albury Griffins 0-5 Southdown
U8s 03.02.07 Griffins 3-0 Brockham Whites The Griffins welcomed Brockham Whites to Albury for their first competitive game since Christmas. The match kicked off in fine conditions and both sides went close in the early period until Ethan Darnell opened the scoring for the Griffins with a fine long range effort on 10 minutes. Brockham pressed for the rest of the first half but good defending from Chris Rogers and Nick Esselen and David Hill's usual steady work in goal maintained the advantage until half-time. The second half saw more good open play from both sides but another goal from close range by Ethan Darnell and a strike right on the final whistle by Will Melhuish saw the Griffins ease to a comfortable 3-0 win. Brockham were disappointed not to score, and on another day would have run the Griffins closer with Ben Morey (keeper), Joe Baker, Oakley Wheeler and William Trigg all having fine games but it was Griffins who went back to the top of the league and Ethan Darnell taking man of the match for his goals and workrate.'

U13s 27.01.07 Henfield 0-10 Albury Eagles Just to say a big thanks to the boys today for a fantastic result. All the boys played really well. Let's hope we can carry it on into our quarter–final match with Partridge Green next week. After a good start from Henfield, Albury weathered the early storm, then took control of the match. Albury led 3-0 at half time. In the second half, Albury played some lovely football and made their pressure tell by scoring a further 7 goals. Man of the match was shared between Harvey Owen and Dan Kelly who played very well in attack. The goal scorers were - Dan Kelly (3), Harvey Owen (3), George Stephens (2), James Ellenger (1) and an own goal.
U12s 27.01.07 Hurstpierpoint 3-1 Albury
U11s 27.01.07 Albury 1-2 Heron Way Albury Eagles under 11's suffered their first home defeat of the season at the hands of third placed Heron Way this week. Setting up an exciting end to the Horsham and District league with three clubs in contention and just a few games remaining in the race to be the league winners. David Hearns scored from close range to equalise Heron Way's first half goal, but despite having the majority of the play, Albury were unable to reply to Heron Way's goal in the second half.

U13s 13.01.07 Horsham League Plate Last 16 Albury Eagles 5-1 Barns Green A good result on Saturday as we were under strength and Noah Pendle-Chambers deputised in Goal for the unavailable Alex Henson. Albury played Barns Green from the division below our own. A good first half performance saw us through into the next round. A goal from Harvey Owen and 4 goals from Dan Kelly saw us control the match. Albury led 3-0 at half time through a Harvey Owen goal and 2 from Dan Kelly. Dan completed his hat-trick in the second half and also grabbed his fourth. Next round of the cup is 3/2/07.We still have a few teams from our own division in the draw so it will be tough. John Caley
U11s 13.01.07 Albury Eagles 1- 0 Greenway One goal was enough to see the Eagles under 11s team maintain their place at the top of the Horsham and District league, and remain three points clear of their second placed rivals, Greenway. In this superbly hard-fought match, early pressure from the Albury team saw them rewarded after a quick free kick from George Duff sent Christopher Brooks through to slot home the first and only goal of the match. Despite heavy pressure from Greenway in the second half, the Eagles managed to defend their goal well with clearances from Alex Dangerfield, Tom Gill and George Blackbee, which helped to make sure that Freddie Wall once again kept a clean sheet in goal. A late solo run from Nathaneal Farrant nearly made the last few minutes of the match more comfortable for the Eagles team, but after breaking away from his markers and rounding the Greenway keeper, his narrow angled shot found the side netting rather than the goal. U9s 13.01.07 AlburyEagles 0-1 TadworthLions A late Tadworth winner spoiled Eagles best performance of the season in an evenly fought contest at the Heath. Keen to erase the memories of a 7-2 trouncing earlier in the season, Eagles played some determined football in a first half long on enterprise and effort but short on goalscoring chances. Sloppy defending had cost Eagles dear in the first game, but with Toby Gibbs in excellent form, Tadworth found the going tough and were restricted to one or two long-range efforts. Driven forward from midfield by an outstanding Pearce McCarron, Eagles went close through John MacCoughlan and Elliott Cozens. The second-half was as evenly balanced as the first, with Eagles going close on a number of occasions. And just when a draw seemed the most likely and fair result, Tadworth grabbed a scrambled late winner. Eagles Man of the Match: Pearce McCarron

U13s 06.01.07 Forest Row 2-4 Albury Eagles Just like to say thanks to everyone who came to the game today and braved quite atrocious wet weather conditions. The pitch was clayey and very muddy and it was literally a mud bath. I had trouble keeping my own feet running up and down the line! But the boys put in a good display today and mastered the conditions better than Forest Row. After taking an early lead through Harvey Owen, Forest Row equalised as the rained poured down. It was a horrible day for defenders as they mis-kicked and had trouble staying on their feet and generally skidded around trying to tackle. Chris Caley restored the lead making it 2-1.Then, Forest Row scored just before half-time to make it 2-2 at the break. Forest Row came at Albury in the second half as Albury again tried to find their feet. Then after a lot of Forest Row pressure, in true Arsenal counter-attacking style, Albury regained the lead with a goal from Harvey Owen to make it 3-2.Then as Albury held on for the win Chris Caley again popped up with his second goal of the game to make the final score a 4-2 win for Albury. Man of the Match was Zac Smith who played a commanding role in central midfield. John Caley
