With something in the order of 170 juniors now playing for Albury youth teams, it has become quite a task to round everything up into some form of news dispatch. Her goes with news and match reports featuring games over the past month.
Beginning with the Saturday before October Half term, track the progress of our teams from U13s downwards. The U13 s have had a great month moving up to now lead their U13C division in the Horsham league. Having been promoted last year to the B division, our U12B team are finding wins a lot harder to come by with an increased standard to meet, and lie 7th of 9 teams. Meanwhile at U11s, John Duff’s team lead their division and have gallantly fought their way through to quarter finals of the Cup competition. Results and tables are not publicised at U10, but U10s in the Horsham League have won almost all their games, and can look forward to a good seeding when leagues are announced for U11s in August 07. Teams at U9 and U8 are playing matches in the Tadworth leagues, U9 Eagles 5th in Division A, U9 Griffins 4th in B, both league teams at U8 are lying 2nd in their divisions, with our third U8 team Lions kicking off their campaign last weekend. Friendlies are also in the pipeline for U7 and U6 departments, again these results not published.
Keep track of most of this by going to our website and clicking on matches and appropriate links.
With the amazing growth of the club, in time we will need more and more ‘Saturday morning’ space to train and play games. The good news is that in principle, we have now negotiated access to use the following extra surfaces -
Bramley Cricket Ground Wonersh Sports Ground Peaslake Recreation Ground Albury Recreation Ground
Managers will need to confer with the Eagles club secretary to get training and games on, but this secures our playing future as numbers steadily grow.
On to the scores and match reports ……….
Matches played on 21st October
U11s Old Dorkinians Saints 7-0 Albury No report
Matches played on 28th October U13s HeronOlympic 3-8 Albury Eagles Another good result. We are now joint-top of the league on 12 points with Old Dorkinians. Yesterday’s game was a bit of a goal-fest! Albury led 3-0 at halftime through goals from Chris Caley, Harvey Owen and a penalty from Dan Kingshott. The referee had given a penalty after a Heron Olympic player hand-balled on the goal line preventing a goal. The player was booked for his troubles. In the second half a hat-trick from Dan Kelly, another from Harvey Owen and one from George Stephens completed the rout. Man of the match was Dan Kelly for his all round game, playing in goal in the first half then playing on pitch and scoring 3 in the second half. Dan Kingshott was also man of the match as he had a steady game in defence. John Caley
U11s 28.10.06 Albury Eagles 9- 0 Handcross A first half hat-trick in under ten minutes from Nathaneal Farrant and four goals spread through the whole game by Christopher Brooks led the Eagles under 11s team to their fourth win in 5 league matches. Two more goals added by George Stevens, now with a reputation for stealing around the back of defences to score (!) saw off a Handcross side that in the first fifteen minutes of the match looked like they would put up more of a battle than the scoreline at the end implies. The Eagles rotating defensive system remains strong with only 5 goals having been conceded in our first six matches this season. Strong performances from Alex Dangerfield and George Blackbee coupled with the awareness of keeper Freddie Wall, and helped out by the rest of the defence, made sure that this was another game where the team left the pitch with a clean sheet. Neil Marshall
U10s 28.10.06 Burpham 1-4 Albury Eagles An 8-a-side friendly against a team which has three sides. Scorers were George Mackenzie, Fraser Millis and Oli Stephens (2).
Matches played on 4th November
U13s 04.11.06 Horsham Crusaders 2-3 Albury Just to say thanks to everyone that attended today. We had a lot of absentees today as some people had other commitments and some kids were ill. I’d like to say a special thanks to Teagan Pitout who played the second half today after being ill for 3 days. He showed great determination and guts today. Today was a very scrappy game. Horsham Crusaders only had 10 players and Albury made very hard work getting all 3 points today. I don’t know if it was the knowledge of playing against 10 players but we definitely weren’t at our best today. Albury scored first through a well worked cross from George Stephens and Chris Caley was on hand to rifle Albury into the lead. Horsham Crusaders came back well and got their equaliser before half time to make the score 1- 1. Into the second half and Albury huffed and puffed. Finally Albury had a corner which fell to Zac Smith on the edge of the box. He twisted and turned and fired a low shot into the corner of the net, 2-1 Albury. Then Albury let Horsham equalise again with a goal out of Jeremy Beadle’s video show! Horsham broke down the wing. A cross flew across the area, the Albury defence left it for each other, and the goalkeeper left the ball thinking the defender was going to clear and the ball trickled into the corner of the net. 2-2. Then 5 minutes from the end, a ball was fired over the top of the Horsham defence. Chris Caley latched onto it. With the keeper to beat he mis-hit his shot which went under the keeper into the net for his 2nd goal of the game and Alburys third. Final score 3-2 to Albury. Man of the Match-Phil Earle who played very well in goal. John Caley
U12s 04.11.06 Albury Eagles 1-4 OldDorkinians Joe Simpson scored for Eagles.
U11s 04.11.06 Heron Way 1 – 1 Albury Eagles Another long range shot that dipped over the Heron Way goalkeeper and into the net by George Duff earned the Albury Eagles under 11s an away point from this Horsham league fixture. A heavy pitch made sure that this was always going to be a tough match and although the Eagles took the lead early in the second half, a quick reply from Heron Way left the game all square at the end. Battling performances from Tom Gill and Philip Smith made sure that Laurie Owen's goal was seldom under threat, and on another day half chances like those from Christopher Brooks, Nathaneal Farrant and Jack Childerstone would have found the net and given the Eagles a more flattering result. Neil Marshall
U10S 04.11.06 Our home games with Northchapel were postponed as Northchapel could not raise teams.
U9s 04.11.06 Holmbury 4-1 Albury Griffins Griffins took on Holmbury at Westcott playing fields on a crisp November morning. Griffins had early pressure with Sam going close after a great run. Against the general run of play, Holmbury opened the scoring with a break-away goal. Holmbury then took control and scored from a corner whilst Griffins struggled to clear the ball. After Tomo was substituted, Louis flashed a shot past the post. Sam has a great shot saved and Charlie dazzled with some fine dribbling. The Holmbury goalie made a great save from Dan. Griffins pulled one back. After a goalmouth scramble, Louis was given the credit although it may have come off a defender. After a 28 minute first half, Holbury scored a goal from a tight angle making the score 3-1. The second half started with both teams going close but Griffins were unable to break down Holmbury’s defence and Holmbury scored a 4th from long range taking the wind out of the Griffins revival. Shaun O’Hanlon
U9s 04.11.06 Holmbury Red 1-1 Albury Eagles Eagles Under 9s turned in their best performance of the season to grab their first league point. At a frosty Westcott Cricket Club, chances came and went for both sides in an evenly balanced first half. But it was Albury who went ahead mid-way through the half thanks to John MacCoughlan’s close-range effort, his fourth goal of the season. Celebrations were short-lived, however, as Holmbury capitalised on poor Eagles concentration to level the scores. Holmbury stepped up the pace in the second half and put Eagles under almost constant pressure but a solid and determined defensive performance saw Eagles home for a well-deserved draw. Eagles Man of the Match: Alex Thrower Mark Thrower
U8s Albury Eagles 6-0 Tadworth Albury Griffins 6-1 Tadworth Great scorelines, but no reports yet!……..Ed.
Matches Played 11th November
U13s 11.11.06 Albury Eagles 4-2 E. Grinstead Just to let you all know that after this week’s performance we are now top of the league. Now we need to continue the good performances and carry it on into next year. Albury started the game slowly and within a couple of minutes of the kick-off we were 1 – 0 down to a very good East Grinstead side. But Albury replied instantly through a goal from Harvey Owen. Then after some interplay from Chris Caley and George Stephens, George crossed the ball for Harvey to power his header into the net to take a 2-1 lead. Then in almost an identical move later on in the first half George again crossed the ball for an East Grinstead Town defender to head past his in keeper into the net for 3-1. Then just before half time Dan Kelly broke through and hit a shot over the keeper’s head and into the net for 4-1. Into the second half and Albury took their foot of the gas and allowed East Grinstead Town to pull back another goal to make the final score 4-2 in Albury’s favour. Well done to everyone and to Harvey Owen as Man of the match for his all round attacking play.
U12s 11.11.06 No Game
U11s 11.11.06 ‘Heron Way Cup’ – Last 16. Horsham Sparrows 2 – 4 Albury Albury Eagles under 11s continued their excellent run of form with a Heron Way Cup win against division A front runners Horsham Sparrows. After going two goals down in the first 15 minutes to a very strong and organised Horsham team, the Eagles battled back to make it 2-2 at half time with goals from David Hearns and Christopher Brooks. Although under pressure in the second half, two surging breakaway goals from Nathaneal Farrant (a major contributor to the Albury Eagles under 11s 50 plus goals so far this season ) and some inspired goal keeping from Freddie Wall, made sure that the Eagles go into the quarter finals of this cup competition. Neil Marshall
U10s 11.11.06 Southdown 4 –2 Eagles Oli Stephens (2)
Southdown 4 – 1 Griffins Matt Foster
U8s Albury Lions 0-1 Holmbury No report

PITCH CARE On Saturday mornings, it would be a great help if assembled parents could help to ensure that the pitch surface is safe for play by flattening/filling any bunny holes that occur overnight. Please put a garden fork in the boot of the car.
SAMBA GOALS We now have ten portable plastic 12ft x 6ft ‘Samba’ goals, but we need to ensure that they are in good working order. Can those that use them please report back to me with any requirements for replacement struts, goal nets, clips etc. Thanks.
