Horsham Plate Round 2
Heron Olympic 3-4 Albury Eagles
I was very pleased with the overall performance today. I thought 3 - 4 was a flattering score line for Heron Olympic today. It may have been a different story. Heron Olympic scored in the 1st minute of the match. Albury then woke up and bombarded the Heron goal. Chris Caley and Harvey Owen both had chances to equalise but didnt take them. Then Albury won a succession of corners. Finally Chris Caley fired a high corner across the penalty area where Zac Smith and a Heron defender challenged for the ball, and as the ball popped up in the air, Zac Smith headed in his 1st goal of the season. Albury again laid siege to the Heron goal. It was looking like Albury were the team from the upper division! A mix up in the Heron defence resulted in a defender deflecting the ball back to his keeper which the referee deemed to be a back pass, thus an indirect free kick was awarded inside the penalty area. Dan Kingshott floated the ball across the penalty area for Chris Caley to rise above the defender and power his header past the keeper and into the net to make the score 2-1.Albury scored again just before halftime when Harvey Owen rounded the keeper and slotted the ball into the net to make it 3-1 to Albury. The 2nd half started with Albury continuing where they left off in the first half attacking the Heron goal. With about 8 minutes to go Harvey Owen broke away and shot from and angle to make it 4-1 to Albury. Then with 6 minutes to go Albury conceded a goal after two defenders mis-kicked in the penalty area allowing a Heron forward to shoot past Alex Henson to make it 4-2. Then 2 minutes later Heron scored again after some sloppy Albury defending, with a Heron forward shooting across our keeper to make it 4-3 to Albury. Then Albury had to see out 6 minutes of injury time to book their place in the Quarter-final of the Plate. Joint Man of the Match went to Josh Lawson for his good defending and good support play from left back and new boy James Ellenger for his tackling and support play from central midfield.                                       John Caley

AlburyEagles 0-5 Ashington
Injuries underlining our shortage in personnel has given the U13s a very difficult season to date.
The goals have dried up recently, and 11 fit players for a game is a positive result these days!
At times, we only had nine players on the pitch midway through the second half of this one sided encounter.
A dominant performance from Hugh Graves at centre back who gained Man of the Match.              Tony Hern

Albury Eagles 2-1 Barns Green
Once again a good result even if the team played poorly. The result was made all the more sweeter as table toppers Twin Oaks went down 2-3 to East Grinstead and Forest Row in 2nd spot only managing a draw against Partridge Green. This now really gives us the impetus to go win our games. If we do we will be top of the league by a point with the games in hand we have. The game against bottom side Barns Green started well for us as we dominated the early play and were camped in the Barns Green half without finding the killer touch to score the goals. The Barns Green keeper who is in the U12s Reps squad played brilliantly making lots of very good saves. When we finally did make the breakthrough it was our top scorer Harvey Owen who scored twice before half time to take his tally to 21 for the season. We then had numerous chances to make it more through shots from Adam and Josh Lawson and Chris Caley and a shot from outside the penalty area from Keith Fagg that cannoned off the bar, but we just couldn’t get that 3rd goal to finish the game. In the 2nd half we had a few more chances with a shot over the bar from Chris Caley and a shot from outside the box from James Ellenger but just couldn’t score. Then as we got more frustrated Barns Green came into the game a lot more. They had a real go in the second half and were rewarded with a goal 10 mins from time. Albury were just hanging on for the win. Barns Green had a few more good chances including a glaring miss just before full time when one of their forwards was clean through and some how screwed his shot past the post. A very close thing for Albury but we held on for all three points. Well

done to everyone. Man of the Match was Josh Lawson who once again tackled well and attacked well down the wing from left-back.       John Caley

Albury  Eagles 6 – 1 Chesworth
Albury played a home match at Alfold on a very big pitch. In the the first half we were playing up a slight slope, this hindered us clearing the ball properly but our defence coped well with anything  Chesworth had to offer. Joe Simpson scored after the goalie saved Harry’s first effort and we went into the break, a goal up. In the second half we were a different class with some excellent play down the right with Dan Cannon breaking quickly and supplying some great passes for Harry Good. Harry scored 2 goals as did Daniel who deserved Man of the Match this week. We continued to dominate and unfortunately Archie had a goal disallowed for offside. Chesworth had a couple of breaks and managed to converted one of them. To cap a great performance Robbie Cross blasted the sixth in from just inside the box. This was a superb performance.                             Mark Hurman

Holmbury 2 - 6 Albury Eagles
                                  Tristan Moses 3
                                  Fraser Millis 2
                                  Joe Mapp
The pressure was on the stand-in coach to maintain the Eagles 100% record so far this season and it didn’t start well. We seemed to be half asleep in the first half and at half time Holmbury had a deserved 1-0 lead.
They came out much stronger in the second half and drew created
plenty of chances before drawing level through a well taken goal by Tristran Moses. Just when we thought we were back in business we found ourselves 2-1 down with about 15 minutes to go. To their

credit the Eagles redoubled their efforts and were rewarded with another equaliser from Fraser Millis. From here on we didn’t look back and we dominated the rest of the game with Tristran completing a well deserved hat-trick, Fraser grabbing his second with an excellent long range strike and Joe Mapp capping a fine display with a goal.
The game ended 6-2 to the Eagles much to the relief of the stand-in coach.
Player of the week went to Oli Turner for some excellent saves which kept us in the game, particularly in the first half.

Holmbury 0 –5 Albury Griffins
                               George Mackenzie 3
                                Tom Cain
                                Adam Clark
We started a bit sluggishly in our first game of the year but created the better chances and were ahead when George Mackenzie volleyed home from Adam Clark’s long throw. Holmbury had a few chances but Ralph Harvey-Jefferson managed to keep a clean sheet in goal. George then got his second before
half time to take us to the break at 2-0.
As often seems to be the case, we improved in the second half and Adam Clark increased the lead mid way through with a well struck shot into the bottom corner. This was followed by another from Tom Cain who latched on to a loose ball in the Holmbury area to make it 4-0.
We were defending well now and our second half keeper James Mathews followed Ralph’s lead with a clean sheet also.
Finally, in the last minute George Mackenzie completed his hat trick after beating a couple of Holmbury defenders to make the final score 5-0 to the Griffins.
Player of the Week went to Samuel Clarke for his excellent concentration and anticipation in defence.

Chiddingfold 6-0 Albury Eagles
Albury only had 10 players for this game, so were always going to struggle against second in the league.
Creditable defending in the second half only let one goal slip past.

Billingshurst 1-8 Albury Eagles
A great thumping 8-1 win away at Billingshurst this week. After conceding a goal in the first five minutes Albury took a stranglehold on this match and dominated from start to finish. Albury led 5-1 at halftime through goals from Sam Bunyan (2),Chris Caley and Harvey Owen (2). Harvey Owen completed his hat-trick in the 2nd half with goals also scored by Dan Kingshott and James Ellenger. Man of the match was James Ellenger for his great midfield work and he bagged a goal too! This result moved us up to 2nd in the table, a point behind the leaders with a game in hand.Well done to everyone!   J Caley

Thames Ditton 1-2 Albury Griffins
Although Thames Ditton do not play in our league, the team were keen to maintain their unbeaten record in this friendly.
We started strongly and looked like we were cruising to victory when Adam Clark put us 1-0 up after 5 minutes with a typically well taken goal. After that we continued to create good chances without being troubled too much in defence. Adam rounded off the half with another good goal to cement our lead at 2-0 at half time.
Thames Ditton made a few changes at half time and we found ourselves under more pressure in  the second half although Jack Bewsey and Sam Clark performed resolutely in front of (frozen!) keeper Ralph Harvey-Jefferson. They were aided by our midfield players defending responsibly, even though a Matt Foster clearance very nearly ended up in the top corner of his own goal. Thames Ditton did manage to pull one back but all in all the Griffins were good value for their victory.
Player of the Week went to Guy Sanders for a battling midfield display despite the freezing and windy conditions.                   Dave MacKenzie.

CLUB TRIP TO FULHAM
14th January
Sixteen Eagles travelled to Craven Cottage, Fulham for training with the Community Coaching staff, followed by attendance of the Fulham v Newcastle game.
A great day out for the boys, with some interesting training drills in Bishops Park, next to the ground, whilst the actual game livenend up in the second half to produce a home win via a single Steed Malbranque goal.
A shame that Michael Owen was not playing (broken foot) but Alan Shearer was on show although he seems to have lost a yard or too these days.
