Newsletter Issue No 25 15/03/2004

I had not planned on preparing weekly newsletters, but with eight games played on Saturday, I think one is certainly merited this week!

Working down the list then, the u11s recorded their sixth straight victory, winning an amazing game 5-7 at West Byfleet. Some indecisive Eagles clearances saw Byfleet grab two breakaway goals either side of a Jack Clifford equaliser, before Eagles took command, cruising to a 2-6 half time lead, thanks to further goals from Jack (hat-trick), Chris Williams and Will Westcott. Experimental changes at the break led to Scorpions getting back into the game at 5-6, before Hugh Graves (MoM – defence) pushed up to grab a seventh. Nice work, also in defence from Ross B, Will W and Harry T(midfield) and ChrisW upfront. Jack Clifford now looks well out of sight for the 2003-4 Golden Boot having scored 23 goals.

The u10s recorded an emphatic 1-5 away win at Tadworth B, coach John Caley commented it could easily have been 10. Goals from Dan Kingshott, Keith Fagg, Zac Smith (2) and Chris Caley who is the squad’s top goalscorer with 8. Man of the Match went to Luke Cannon who played really well without scoring a goal. JC

The u9s played back to back home games, their large squad now fielding a league side (Eagles) and a friendly side (Griffins). No goals unfortunately to report, following a gritty 0-0 with Brockham, and a narrow 0-1 defeat to Longacre, but David Harris is pleased to report that recent problems in defence seem to have been sorted.

Many congratulations to the u8s, with both their sides qualifying for the Play Offs in the Tadworth League.
The bad news is that they have to play each other in one of the semi finals! The match is scheduled for this coming Saturday. The other play-off semi final is an all Brockham affair.
The Griffins completed their league programme with a 2-0 home win against a stubborn Kiko Panthers side – an afternoon kick off too! Scorers were Chris Brooks and Harvey Marshall.
The Eagles kept up their match fitness with a 1-1 home draw with Longacre School u8/9s, who supplied three age groups for games on the Heath on Saturday. A first club goal here this season for Oliver Scott.

The combined u7/u6 squad being crafted by Nick Sanders and Finn Jackson enjoyed two run outs against Longacre sides, losing by two and five.
Alfie Minto, Christian Newman, and Tim Brooks played extremely well, as did Guy Sanders, Sam Hoyland, Sam Parsons, and Ralph Harvey-Jefferson.
Having built the good basic skills, the players realise that they now need to start thinking about keeping positions on the field. Player of the week was Billy Tompkins, for his determination, attitude, and huge kicking ability, taking the ball deep into the opposing half. FJ.
