Latest news takes into account games played over the past two weekends, which have seen the conclusion of matches played in the Tadworth league, where our u10s, u9s and u8s have been competing since last September. John Caley’s u10s team have finished a very creditable second in their league, to runaway winners Tadworth. Their final game, a 4-1 away victory at Priory saw Dan Kingshott let fly, scoring 2 goals. Chris Caley unleashed two screamers to win the game and finish up as u10s top goal scorer.
The u9s were narrowly beaten 2-1 at home to Tadworth in their final game. Having gone 1-0 down to a wickedly deflected goal, Albury equalised in the second half thanks to Ollie Harris, who ran the length of the pitch to score his 7th of the season and finish top scorer. He then promptly substituted himself following the celebrations, as he was suffering from tonsillitis! There were chances at both ends with Tadworth winning with the last kick of the match – a rasping curler from the edge of the box.
The climax to the u8s season began on the Heath on 20th March, with the tie we were trying to avoid – an all Albury semifinal of Griffins v Eagles. Griffins beat the Eagles 4-2 after extra time (2-2 at full time.) Harvey Marshall, Phillip Smith 2 and Chris Brookes scored for the Griffins, whilst Tom Cantoni and Lewys Bonds replied for the Eagles. Two Brockham sides contested the other semifinal. The Griffins were pipped 1-0 by Brockham Green in the final having had the opportunities to win the match in the early part of the game only to be beaten by a shot off the post in the dying minutes. The Eagles were also unfortunate getting beaten on penalties in the 3rd/4th place final after drawing 1-1 after extra time, they too dominating the early part of the match. Tom Cantoni netted the Eagles goal. Credit to our opponents Brockham Black who played well. Even though we didn't quite do it I think both the Griffins and Eagles had fantastic seasons in finishing 2nd and 4th out of some 14 teams in their first competitive season. John Duff Last Saturday, the u11s were going for a seventh straight win, but came unstuck at Onslow Boys, going down 3-1 in a 9 a side game. Onslow passed the ball around better, and Albury found it hard to recover after conceding two early soft goals. Harry Thomas impressed in defence (MoM) and newcomer Ashley Carvalho had a good game. Our u6/u7s played Tadworth on Saturday 20th March, fielding 2 teams in a mini-tournament. The "Yellow" team were unlucky to draw 0-0 in their first match, having had most of the possession, but failing to convert it into goals. They were then even more unlucky to lose 1-0 to a late goal in the second, despite again having had most of the possession, and half a dozen shots at goal. The "Orange" team played out of their skins coming away with 2 excellent wins, twice coming back from 1-0 down to win both games 2-1. The boys have really started to understand about playing in their positions and for the first time we had a discernable defence, midfield and attack. Sam Parsons scored 3 excellent goals and Guy Sanders scored the other, a clinical finish from a tight angle. ALL the boys played extremely well, with great skill and determination shown by each of them at different points of the game. Players of the week were Sam Hoyland for his critical contributions in attack and defence, and Rollo Jackson for the improvement he has shown and the battling performance he gave in dominating midfield with Guy Sanders.
