Newsletter Issue No 30 30/09/2004

Just about through the first month of the season, and most of our teams now have a game under their belts, as the club continues to grow rapidly.
30 new players have joined since the summer, with Albury now fielding eleven teams at seven age groups, u6 through to u12s (school year 7).
Where two Albury teams operate within one age group, we divide the players as Eagles or Griffins, with even ability to the best of our judgement!

League play is under way from u8s and upwards, whilst a thriving group of players at u7 / u6 combine to play a series of friendlies, which is where we start this season's reporting.

On Saturday 25th September the Eagles Under 7 squad played their first matches of the season, at home against Tadworth.
With two Albury sides playing two equally matched sides from Tadworth, the four games played could hardly have been closer. Albury won the first game 4-3, lost the next two games 0-1, and then won the final game 1-0.
The 5 Albury goals were scored by Tristan Moses, but all the players played well, with some great defending as well as attacking.
Finn Jackson

The U8s began with a stunning 5-0 win over Brockham Blues. All the goals came in a very impressive 1st half performance. Harry Ford, man of the match controlled the game from the midfield, also scoring 2 goals. The other goals came from Matt Foster, who scored twice and always looked dangerous on the break and Adam Clarke. Nick Sanders

U9s Albury Griffins
In a repeat of last years final, champions Brockham played host to runners-up Albury Griffins. With the teams all square at half time 0-0, Brockham took the lead with a disputed goal. Griffins man of the match, goalkeeper Lawrie Owen appeared to have the ball kicked out of his hands for the opening goal. Brockham made it 2-0 with a well taken goal. With six minutes to go, skipper Harvey Marshall pulled one back for the Griffins after a nice build up involving George Duff, Oliver Cose and Tom Gill. Unfortunately time ran out and the Griffins were unable to find the equaliser.
U9s Albury Eagles
The Eagles opened their league account against Onslow and found themselves 1-0 down at half time. After some heavy pressure on the Onslow goal, Eagles man of the match Colby Silver hit a tremendous equaliser with an unstoppable volley. A much improved Onslow team had a couple of chances but good defending by James Godfrey & George Stevens prevented Onslow scoring. Good performances from Nathaniel Farrant and Lewys Bonds. John Duff

At U10s, a great start for the Griffins who won 3-2 away at Tadworth Lions, with Harry Good scoring twice and a third for Ben Hurman.
Not such good news for the Eagles who despite leading 1-0 after 10 mins, were beaten 2-5 by Onslow FC. Both goals (and fine efforts they were too) were scored by James Hern.
David Harris

The under 12s find themselves with a busy programme of league action ahead this winter, with two home games played at Albury already.
Defeats to Kirdford (1-4) and Lower Beeding (2-5) have seen Eagles starting slowly but finishing strongly, in games featuring strong opposition.
Highlights so far include excellent keeping from Will Hern, great defensive displays from Ross Beasley and Hugh Graves, whilst Sam Kaye’s magnificent curling free kick last week was one Becks would have been proud to score. Tony Hern

ALBURY PITCH RENOVATION
Whilst the Grasshopper (ACC groundsman) weaves his magic with a besom broom and a bag of grass-seed slung over his shoulder he also fashions excellent bacon sarnies, by the way most training has transferred to Shere Rec for the time being. With thanks to Tom the groundsman in Shere, training times are as follows:

u8, u10 – 9am – 10.30am
u6, u7, u9 – 10.30am – Noon.
u11 and u12 will be playing away.

We aim to return to Albury for mid October will keep you posted on that one.
TRAINING TOPS
For all league players at u8 and above, the new shower proof training tops have been very well received
Many thanks to Lynne Smith and James Brown for getting these excellent garments sorted.
It would be extremely helpful if name labels could be sewn into the collars to aid identification !! For washing, please follow the care instructions.
