Latest reporting takes into account the last couple of Saturdays in January, the month seeing great weather for footy at this time of year, mild and not much rain about, with pitches holding up really well. League programmes are thus well on schedule to finish on time this season.
There was just one game played on Sat 22nd January…..
U12s Albury Eagles 1-7 Heron Olympic After a very even opening 15 minutes, Heron took control to lead 0-2 at Half time. Knowing Eagles had to match Heron’s superior speed on the ball after the break, a nice attack found both Sams linking well to provide Will Westcott with a clean run in on goal which he duly converted for his 6th strike of the season. Having pegged back Heron to 1-2, this only inspired the visitors to commence a scoring spree which saw a further five away goals netted, although Eagles mounted several attacks themselves, and were unlucky not to convert a possible four. Cool finishing was not our strong point today, as the ball repeatedly bounced agonisingly past the wrong side of the Heron posts! Man of the Match to Hugh Graves for being seemingly everywhere on the pitch, whilst excellent performances also came from Will H (goal) and Sam Schoen for attacking wingplay. Tony Hern
On now to matches played on 29th January……………
U12s Lower Beeding 4 - 4 Albury Eagles A great performance from the under 12s, away to Lower Beeding, one of the top teams in the league. After going 4-1 down midway through the second half, the lads showed tremendous fighting spirit (Finlay perhaps a little too literally....) and produced a stirring fight back to draw 4-4 that had the spectators cheering them on in excitement. The Eagles stormed back with a spectacular long-range shot from Jack Clifford from around 35 yards out, sandwiched between two well-worked goals from Sam Kaye, the Eagles top marksman. Two incisive through passes from Finlay & Steven, who were playing in central midfield, put Sam through to score with his usual aplomb. Sam also had an assist in Will Westcott's opening goal. Will played a real captain's role, encouraging his team-mates on to a terrific effort in that dramatic last twenty minutes. Man of the match was Ross Beasley, who put in a quite outstanding performance at the back, covering every blade of grass and making many saving challenges. Despite the team's excellent performance, Will Hern was still called upon to make some magnificent saves, helping the Eagles gain a valuable point. Every player in the team contributed enormously and perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the game was the team spirit the Eagles showed, manifested in the spontaneous team huddle they did at the final whistle. It's great to report their continuing improvement in form over the earlier part of the season, marked by the following comment from one of the opposition coaches "God help the team you play next week!". Ian Grogan
U10s Tadworth Lions 1- 5 Albury Eagles The Eagles returned to winning ways on Saturday with a comprehensive win over Tadworth Tigers. Despite conceding an early goal through a penalty and the referee threatening to send off one of the players for violent conduct, the team pulled themselves together and went on to score three first half goals through Jack Gill, Ollie Harris and James Hern. Although only seven players were available for the game, the work rate and momentum was maintained in the second half and two further goals from Jack Gill meant that the result was never in doubt. MOTM went to Jack for his hatrick, but again, some impressive passing and overall teamwork, highlighting the benefit of James and Greg's coaching. David Harris
U10s Albury Griffins 2-0 Onslow Albury and Onslow were joint second before this match. In the warm up everyone was keen and looking forward to the game. The match started very well for the Griffins with lots of chances in the first five minutes, the Onslow goalie was making some very good saves and kept the game alive for them as the first half drew to a close. This was a great game to watch and Daniel Cannon pulled of some super saves for the Griffins to keep the scores level at half time. The team talk then was "more of the same please!". The start of the second half had the Griffins attacking from the off and everyone's effort was rewarded when Daniel broke through to score, the game continued to get better with some good chances for Onslow to equalise, but William in goal and the defence kept them at bay. Finally with one of our many efforts Harry eased the nerves by adding a second and Henry was so close to adding another with his head. The game finished 2 - 0 and a thoroughly deserved victory was ours. The Griffins now move above Onslow, look out Walton. M.O.M Daniel Cannon with a great team performance. Mark Hurman
U9s St Annes Blues 1 - 1 Albury Griffins
AlburyEagles 0 - 2 Brockham Green No reports
U8s Brockham Reds 2 - 3 Albury Eagles
AlburyGriffins 3–0 TadworthTigers No reports
U7s Albury Eagles 3-0 Priory Panthers Albury Eagles had an excellent game against Priory Panthers, with great contributions from all the players. Playing only one team helped us to concentrate talent. Goalie Timothy Brooks made some magnificent saves for Albury Eagles before Henry Stevens scored a great all-important opening goal soon in the second half. Thomas Wall followed with a well composed fast run from the half way line, and Sam Hoyland blasted one in from some twenty yards, which nobody saw except the net. Terrific midfield and defensive work made for a good show of what Albury Eagles U7s can do. Man of the match award to Thomas Haldenby for a series of good contributions. Tim Foulsham
FOOTBALLERS WANTED We have space in the squads for a few more children at u7 (school year 2), and there a couple of u10 spaces available. Meanwhile at u11, John Caley will be looking for a few more in order to tackle league action next September.
Otherwise, Eagles and Griffins teams are now running waiting list status, with club membership having rocketed to 128 in less than three years.
Half Term Training on the Heath For those families that are not taking advantage of the chance to get away for a few days over Half Term, Eagles are once again combining with our friends in Ripley, Planet Sport, to provide some extra training.
On 14th and 15th February, there will be coaching for u7s through to u12s, whilst on 16th February, we are running a dedicated goalkeeper course. Forms are available from your team managers, or myself, with the goalkeeper course. Training is from 10am-3pm on each day.
