With still a few items of news to come in, this looks to be the last newsletter of what has been quite a hectic season.
It has been a mere three and a bit years since we began Eagles, with the original squad of eight players now having mushroomed to a playing staff of some 130 children! We have operated ten teams this season, with League participation at u8, u9, u10 at Tadworth, whilst the u12s represented us in the Horsham League.
This has been the first season where, inspite of the expanse of the playing area on Albury Heath, we found it necessary to stagger training times into two distinct waves, to accommodate everybody.
The late summer /autumn period saw some major pitch care rolling into action, under the judicious gaze of Roland Woods, with the industrious Grasshopper chiefly responsible for the much improved playing surface we have enjoyed. The cricketers are now playing on lush turf for the first time in decades.
Eagles expect to add another 30 players over the summer, as club growth continues, with additional pitch options now being sought in the neighbourhood. We shall have three teams playing on the full sized pitch as teams from u11 to u13 tackle the Horsham League, with again, a strong raft of teams aimed at the Tadworth Schools League.
On now to tie up the last few games and action of the 2004-05 season.

U11s Albury Eagles 5-1Chiddingfold Just to say another good performance by the boys on Saturday. A good 5-1 win Vs Chiddingfold. Goals from Sam Bunyan (2), Harvey Owen, Keith Fagg and Chris Caley. That was only the 2nd time all season where we’ve been able to field a full strength side. Just a quick mention about the 2 new SIGNINGS!!!. Both Jake and Callum made good debuts for the club. Jake played well up front alongside Chris Caley. Both had a good understanding and Jake showed he is an accomplished player on the ball. Callum slotted in well in the left wing position and did well using his speed to get forward at every opportunity. John Caley
U12s Albury Eagles 5-1 Maidenbower We saved our best performance of the season for our last game, a convincing home win. Three up after seven minutes, there was only really ever going to be one winner! Hugh Graves and Sam Kaye caused constant problems upfront for Maidenbower, each grabbing early goals, helped by great linking play in midfield from Jack Reddick and Stephen Robinson. In his last game for Eagles, Jack Clifford signed off in typical style – with a hat-trick - thanks to Jack for all he has done for the squad, as he now concentrates on rugby. MoM to Ross for excellent defensive work. Leigh Batchelor had a debut game as keeper and performed very well including an excellent second half save. Having hit post and bar, and with Eagles trying some new permutations, Maidenbower finally got a consolation goal late on. Tony Hern
Eagles finished in tenth place in Division C, three wins and three draws alongside 14 defeats, but some invaluable experiences gained along the way. Knowing that next season will be just as tough, the squad recently conducted trials, including some new players, from which a final 16 were selected for 2005-06. Thanks to all players for their efforts this season.
Saturday 30th April
U11s Albury Eagles 1 - 7 Cranleigh Long grass on an unprepared temporary pitch on the back field at Tillingbourne school resulted in very difficult playing conditions for both teams. Cranleigh started far sharper moving in to a well deserved 4 - 0 lead by half time. A half time reorganisation by Andy Kingshott resulted in Albury putting up a far more spirited response in the second half. Cranleigh missed a penalty and Dan Kingshott hit the bar with a great free kick. Harvey Owen slotted in a well deserved consolation goal late in the game. The scoreline flattered Cranleigh somewhat but the match was nevertheless an indication as to the level of opposition we may face in the Horsham League next season. Sage Henson
Sunday 8th May Ockley Tournament Well done to the u12 players who attended the Ockley tournament on Sunday. Ross, Finlay, Harry, Sam K, Will H, Hugh, Robert and Jack R. We played 6 games, and very nearly got through to the final. Results: Eagles 2-0 Ockley A Eagles 1-0 Copthorne B Eagles 2-0 Brockham Eagles 0-1 Kirdford Eagles 0-2 Copthorne A Eagles 1-2 Ockley B Everything was going fine, played 3 won 3, imagined Kirdford would be a toughie, which it was, but then hoped to get the better of the last two sides (which we did not!) Highlights - beating the league champions and eventual winners, Ockley A, 2-0, in our first game. 5 goals for Sam Kaye, one for Finlay. Sam opned the scoring in our last game after only 3 seconds ! Tony Hern
U11s The kids did really well in the Ockley 6-a-side tournament. They played some very strong teams from the Horsham league. They finished 2nd in their group losing their only group game 1-0 vs Horsham Crusaders. They got into the semi-final and lost to the Royal of Horsham 1-0 as well. Overall it was a very good performance and a good yardstick for next season. John Caley
Saturday 14th May
U11s Onslow Orcs 2 – 6 Albury Eagles We played an 11-a-side match against Onslow Orcs last Saturday. Their manager told me that they finished 2nd in the D league of the north-east Hants league. We romped into a 3-0 lead at half time. Goals from Chris Caley, Sam Bunyan and a strike from outside the box from Phil Earle. Onslow replied at the start of the 2nd half making it 3-1.We then replied with 2 more goals. Chris Caley scoring twice to get his hat-trick.Then we handled the ball in the penalty area and Onslow scored from the spot making it 5-2. Then towards the end of the match a lovely passing move down the wing with Harvey Owen and Chris Caley involved ended up with Chris crossing the ball into the box for Harvey to hit the ball first time into the net. Final score 6-2. Man-of-the-match Sam Bunyan for his tireless midfield work. John Caley
U12s Scoop Fair Play Award A nice way to round the season off came via a phone call from the Horsham League to advise that our Eagles U12s had been awarded the Fair Play Shield for best overall sportsmanship in the Horsham U12s League, beating the scores of 30 other teams. Match reports include space for comments from opposition who assess general conduct and behaviour during games.
We were particularly pleased to be awarded this, as it says a great deal about the aims and ambitions of the club as a whole, accentuating the positive, and constantly encouraging our players on to their next GOALS! Well done lads!
Captain Will Westcott, flanked by Bob Moorcroft and Will Hern collect the Horsham League Sportsmanship award.
GUILDFORD SAINTS 6-a-side TOURNAMENT 7th and 8th May Teams were entered at u7, u8 and u9 levels, in this local and very well run tournament.
U7s It was an enjoyable day and the team enjoyed it. Unfortunately today the competition was beyond us. Everyone got a medal though. Results from our four group games: Lost 0-1, 0-1, 0-2, 0-6. Tim Foulsham
U9s Albury under 9's were placed in a very strong qualifying group, which included tournament favourites, Aldershot. The Eagles won this group beating Aldershot 2-1, Farncombe 2-0 and Guildford Saints 5-0. The latter a tremendous result, considering the matches were 5 minutes each way. But, for the 3rd year running the Eagles went out at the semi final stage this time to West Byfleet 1-0, who went on to win the tournament. The single goal came with 2 minutes to go with a tremendous volley that left Albury keeper Laurie Owen with no chance. Albury had their chances to win the match which was always going to be very close and even. This was a fine team performance from the squad of Laurie Owen, Alex Dangerfield, Tom Gill, James Godfrey, Harvey Marshall, Chris Brookes, Tom Cantoni and Nathanael Farrant. John Duff
