Fun Day coming up this Sunday brings to a close another very successful season at Albury Eagles FC.

Player numbers are now around the 180 mark, with 14 teams now operating.

It is quite a sight on winter Saturday mornings to see the Heath thronging with so many keen footy enthusiasts, especially when the weather is kind.

We did have a very wet period of weather before Xmas, then a very cold and ultimately snowy spell in the first few weeks of 2009, but all league programmes were completed on time.

Our youngest group, at U6/U7 have been successfully coached this season by a former player at Eagles, Steven Robinson. There is a hearty core of a dozen players, with new players coming along in the last few weeks of the season. Their spring training has just finished actually, with use of Tillingbourne school up until last weekend.

Murray Farrant reports a good season at U8, their first experience of league games in the Tadworth League, although, adhering to FA guidelines, we are not able to provide details of results/ tables.

Moving on through the higher age groups in the Tadworth League, I am able to report that the U9 Eagles finished a creditable 3rd in U9 Div A - they

Played 10, Won 6, Drew 1 and Lost 3.

Meanwhile the U9 Griffins side finished 4th in U9 Division B. Playing 14, they won 6, drew 2 and lost 6.

The U10 Eagles finished 3rd in U10 Div A, having

played 12, winning 6 and losing 6.

The U10 Griffins continued on from a successful season last time round, by finishing 1st in U10 Div B

playing 13, winning 10 and remaining unbeaten.

Meanwhile, the U10 Lions finished 2nd in U10 Div C,

Played 9, Won 5, Drew 1 Lost 3.

Congratulations to all our mini-soccer sides!

Stepping up to the 11 a side game, we had 5 teams operating this season.

At times, quite a headache to organise pitches and training space for all, but thanks to extra pitches at Alfold, Wonersh and Bramley, we got through the fixtures well.

The U11s had an excellent baptism at the big pitch game; they finished second in Div D of the Horsham League, gaining promotion to Div C, playing 14, winning 12 and losing just 2.

At U12, our side finished 6th in Div B of the Horsham league, played 14, won 5, drew 2, lost 7. Steady stuff, but at times, it was a struggle getting sufficient playing personnel.

The U13s finished 7th of 10 in Div A of the Horsham league, they played 18, won 7, drew 1, lost 10. Tough games each week at this level, but a very good season for this side.

The U14s came 3rd in Div C of the Horsham League, and within a whisker of promotion, they played 16 won 10 drew 1, lost 5. Maybe they’ll do it next time round?

This squad were also awarded the Horsham League U14 Fair Play shield. Congratulations!

Last but certainly not least, our most senior team, at u15,

is disbanding, some of the players having been with the club since it’s formation in 2002.

After a promising start, a struggle for players each week in the very demanding U15 Div A eventually saw the side relegated, finishing bottom.

We wish the very best of luck to this squad as the players move on to other clubs to further their playing potential.

Albury Eagles Under 9 team triumph at Ewhurst Junior FC 2009 Six a Side Tournament

On a beautiful sunny afternoon on Sunday, 27th April, an Under 9s team from Albury Eagles prevailed over Cranleigh in a close fought final following semi-finals and a two league 10 team group stage in an excellently organised Ewhurst Junior FC Six a Side tournament.

With both teams displaying excellent organisation and passing skills, the game flowed from end to end with both keepers being called on to make good saves. In the final moments of the first half, a long ball was met by the Cranleigh No 5 who cleverly managed to turn the Eagles defender and slot the ball home to register the first goal conceded by the Eagles keeper in the entire tournament.

In the second half the Eagles immediately responded with a sustained period of pressure on the Cranleigh goal in a series of attacks from both left and right, the equaliser eventually coming from a neat move down the right ending with an excellent cross by Jay Lawson which was turned in at the far post by Archie Eve.

Although there was time for several further attacks by both teams, the deadlock was not broken leaving the teams at 1-1 at the final whistle.

In accordance with the tournament rules, Albury Eagles were awarded the winners medals by virtue of their superior goal difference in the group stages.

U13s Horsham League Div A Double Header

18.04.09

Hurstpierpoint 1 – Albury Eagles

Albury Eagles 1 – 2 Hurstpierpoint

Albury Eagles under 13s ended their season with a "double header " ( two matches in one ) away to league title hopefuls Hurstpierpoint. Having not been beaten at home after winning 6 and drawing 1 game, it was a tough task for Albury to gain anything from this match. But through determination Albury managed to hold off a strong Hurstpierpoint side and after what looked like a winning goal for them in the first match, Christopher Brooks made his way into the penalty area and shot low into the right hand side of the goal to earn Albury a point and ending Hurstpierpoint's chances of winning the league title.

The second match saw Hurstpierpoint dominate again, scoring two quick goals to close out the match, but  before the end of the game Tom Beazley linked up with Harvey Marshall to put Christopher Brooks through to beat the Hurstpierpoint keeper once again.

This has been an up and down season for the under 13s with some disappointing results mixed in with playing some fantastic football that has been a joy to watch. The Eagles will learn from their first season at the highest level and will take this into their second season in the A division of the Horsham and District Youth League.

On a sad note Freddie Wall and George Stevens will be leaving the Eagles this season, both have been with the club for the past 6 years and have played a big part in the success of their team, they have been a credit to themselves and to the club and will be missed by the whole of the under 13s squad.
