Albury Eagles 1 – 6 Ockley Acorns Utd

Today was another bad day at the office. We were really up against it this week. After 3 boys missed playing due to illness last week, I thought we were over the worst of it. But again I had to re-shuffle the team as I lost Ben Smith and Dan Kingshott due to illness. We welcomed Dan Kelly back, a bonus as his county match being called off meant he could play for Albury. Ockley went into a 3-0 lead. Then as we started to steady the ship and get back into the game, Zac Smith came off injured in the first half which meant another re-shuffle. Dan Kelly got injured on the stroke of halftime and couldn’t run. At halftime Dan Kelly went in goal and Ben Walter took his place on the pitch. Albury had a corner and Ben Walter who had just come out of our goal rose to head past the Ockley keeper to make it 3-1. Without any substitutes and boys carrying injuries Albury finally succumbed and lost 6-1.

We look to next week when we play Royal Utd and hopefully getting back to winning ways.

Twin Oaks 5 – 2 Albury Eagles

It was a cold and wet Saturday when the Eagles took on Twin Oaks away. We had only had 11 players available this week and some players had to play out of position. The boys gave 100% on a muddy and sticky pitch which the Crawley side used to their advantage and took a half time lead. In the second half we managed to equalise with Henry Schoen finishing after some great dribbling and close control from Harry Good. Unfortunately Twin Oaks soon regained the lead after we could not clear the ball from our penalty box. As we pushed for another goal they broke away to make it 3 – 1. Twin Oaks were awarded a penalty when Jack collided with their striker who was twice his size. We then pulled one more back through James Hern but the game eventually finished 5 – 2. Unlucky boys

Albury Eagles 1 – 2 Steyning Strikers

Albury Eagles under 13s suffered an unlucky defeat at the hands of Steyning Strikers helped mainly by an outstanding performance by the away goal keeper . Having dominated from the start, time and again the Eagles were frustrated by the Strikers keeper and were only able to convert one of their many chances when Philip Smith broke through in front of goal to slot the ball into the net just seconds before half time.

With Colby Silver and Alex Dangerfield returning from injuries to stiffen up the defence it seemed that Albury would continue to press forward and add to the scoreline in the second half . But fortune was not on Albury's side and when Steyning levelled through an own goal and gained another with one of their few chances, Albury knew it was not to be their day again !.

Albury Lions 0 – 0 Mogador

Yet again another battle took place upon the grey, cold and dank surroundings of this blasted heath (to paraphrase and re-quote Messers Shakesphere and sons!) This was equally matched football at its most nail biting, cold toes curling best. Neither team could break the other. Despite the valiant efforts of the roaring Lions, they could not break the pill of the Mogador.

Time after time each team ploughed up the pitch at an attempt to score and each time the opposing team fought them back and sent the ball back up the line. Short of building an extensive net work of trenches and slowing things down to the impass that is the awfullness of  trench warfare, there was no breakthrough! Mogador played a hard game of football and many heads and other limbs did clash in the cold but nobody seemed to get the advantage that was needed to make the first goal.

Rhys played a brilliant game and stayed in goal for the whole match, making some great saves and really hoofing the ball back up the pitch after each Mogador attack. Charlie/Ross/Max played a hard and fast game in defence and the strong running of Patrick/William (Captain) and Matthew in the midfield kept the ball moving and more importantly kept the defence secure. Tom and Joe attacked on both fronts (Left and Right) and were helped out by William later in the game and Charlie moved up to the midfield. Chances came and went and Matthew so nearly scored after a determined run by and shot at goal by Joe, bounced off the keeper and Matthew was in the right place at the right time to strike it home. It was not to be and again and again the Lions tried to break the deadlock. Some great corners by Tom opened up many chances but each time Mogador put them down.

All in all another good performance, yes a win would have been great but at the same time to play a team who were so equally match was good practice for later battles.

Well done Lions and a big thank you as ever for the huge parental support, during and after the game. Thanks to Ian for pacing the line and especially thanks to Mark for reffing the match so well.

Man of the Match goes to Joe for his running on and to the ball skills and generally never giving up.
